Infertility is such a silent battle. Many times, those who are going through it, go through it alone in quiet. Do you ever wonder why that is?
After dealing with this myself and talking with many other women, the answers all remain the same:
I am broken
I must have done something wrong
It hurts to explain myself over and over
People are always assuming I don't want kids
Everyone asks when we are going to have children.
Men are never treated like they are on the topic
And these are just the popular ones. So, they keep to themselves, laugh through the pain of your questions and cry on the inside. Unless someone has also walked the same path, they are afraid to open up and speak the truth because the comments that follow after hurt just as much....
Have you tried xyz? it worked for my friend
Why don't you stop trying? I hear that helped my cousin
Have you ever considered adoption?
What about using fertility treatments?
The questions continue and they continue to dig into the hurt we already experience. In today's world the internet is a vast source of information. Chances are when a woman is deep in the journey of infertility, she has done a few google searches answering all these questions for herself.
Many times what we are looking for is support. We want to hear words of encouragement and words that say you either understand or that you are there for us...
I am sorry, is there anything I can do?
I had no idea you were dealing with this, how can I pray for you?
I can't imagine what you are going through, I am here to listen if you need it?
Many times there are no answers. Many times just knowing you are not alone in the battle is huge. Even if the people supporting you have never gone through it, just to know they are there for you emotionally means a lot.
